What was the last movie you watched?

Postby G-Matt on Tue May 13, 2008 6:38 pm

It's pretty simple. Just tell what movie you've seen recently, give it a few thoughts and maybe rate it too.

I just watched Deep Rising (1998), a movie about a group of hijackers being terrorized by a gigantic sea monster aboard a luxury ship. As you may guess, the movie wasn't so great. Especially the CGI-generated creature looked pretty bad. Perhaps the only saving grace was Treat Williams (Everwood), who played the main role. 5/10

Star Wars (1977). One of my all time favorite films and it defined a whole genre of films. 10/10. :)

Juno: Just watched it this morning on ppv! Excellent movie & music, well worth the Academy Award. I thought Ellen Page's acting was only fair, (too much apathy), and she didn't come off as quirky as the character in the script, but she was adequate. 9/10

Just watched Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967), a Korean monster movie. The movie is pretty silly in every department: dull acting, terrible music and bad special effects. But still, it's one of those movies that are so bad that they're actually entertaining in their own way. 2/5

Prince Caspian. It was decent, but had somethings that weren't needed, and was really long. 7/10

Firehouse Dog. It was quite decent. I particularly liked the "finale", it was pretty exciting. I admit, Josh wasn't as good as he was in BTT, but he still did a pretty nice job in his acting. 3/5

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was actually much better than I had expected. I didn't think that it would be that good partly because Harrison Ford is starting to get old, but he was still able to do a very nice performance. If there would be a fifth film with Harrison as Indy I would definitely go and see it. 8/10

Speed Racer (PG) all the critics defiantly got this wrong with there reviewing. if you are a fan of the old tv series then you would definitely love this movie. everything was perfect in according to the show and they made the races look amazing. CGI is the future guys and this movie did a fantastic job with it. i will definitely buy this movie when it comes out on DVD and i highly recommend it to anyone. 10/10

I decided to watch Little Manhattan again. It's not a great film. Charlie Ray was terrible, and Josh probably felt... uncomfortable during filming. Well, it had moments. 7/10.

Madadayo, directed by Akira Kurosawa. A truly beautiful movie, and definitely different from most of his other movies, like Seven Samurai. Great storyline and wonderful acting. 5/5

What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993). Johnny Depp plays the title character in the fictional town of Endora, Iowa. Gilbert is part of a dysfunctional family, with a terribly obese mother, an older sister that has to be the one watching out for the rest, a retarted brother (played to perfection by Leonardo DiCaprio), another, smart mouth, rude younger sister, and he mentions that a brother managed to get away, and the father commited suicide years ago. Gilbert's life is changed when a woman comes into town and changes Gilbert's life for good.

The cast isn't at all superstars, minus Depp and DiCaprio, although they weren't at all big until the film was released. I personally liked it for it's being unusual and a frank look at how bad life may seem, and the performances were spectacular. 9.5/10

Prophecy (1979). All in all, a surprisingly decent monster/horror movie from director John Frankenheimer. Good acting, an enjoyable music score, and some very creepy moments. The ending, though, wasn't quite good enough. 3.5/5

The Happening. I was really excited to see this film after I saw the trailer and in the beginning it didn't seem like I was going to be disappointed. But after the second half of the film everything started to get old since the things you knew about what was happening you already knew in the beginning. But all in all it was OK. Completely watchable but I don't know if you would watch it many times after that. Zooey's performance was really good in my opinion and I didn't know she was in this movie before I went to see it, so I was pleasantly suprised. And she had a much bigger role here than in BTT so you could really see her acting abilitys which are very good. 6/10

Hey, Teralian. Was the ending surprising? His movies always seem to have a really cool twist at the end.

Schlindler's List: 10/10 Heartbreaking, appalling and inspiring. Interesting that they filmed it in black and white. Not much else to say.

To Hell and Back: 8/10 Audie Murphy playing himself. How cool is that? (Though I wonder how he felt about it.)This movie was actually a lot better than some of the war movies made a decade or two later. Since it was an older movie though, some of the acting was a little off. Mostly just the way some of the guys said the dialog. It's hard to explain, but sometimes their tone of voice just sounded unnatural. If you've seen the clips of the 85' version of BtT on youtube you'd know what I mean. The movie seemed to focus on individual soldiers more than just the war, which was nice, and all the special affects were pretty realistic, except that explosion with the tank at the end. I'd recommend seeing it.

Zathura: 8/10 Great acting and special effects, with a pretty cool story. Nice lesson too. I enjoyed it, though it's not something I'd want to watch more than once.

ARRRGH! How can you even mention To Hell and Back and the '85 version of BtT in the same paragraph? Granted, the dialogue of To Hell and Back would seem stiff by today's standards, but that film was made a year before I was born, and I'm the Old Man of this forum; compare it instead to some other movies of the '50s. But don't even compare it to BtT-85. As I said in my review in the old forum, the dialogue from BtT-85 sounded like the dialogue from a Charlie Brown TV special with Canadian accents. (Oh, and Audie Murphy resisted making To Hell and Back for nearly ten years and then wanted someone younger to play him. Universal Studios practically blackmailed him with threats to never let him work for them again if he didn't agree to playing himself.)

I have very low expectations for The Happening and am considering seeing it in the theater only because of Zooey Deschanel. As far as I'm concerned, until shown otherwise, M. Night Shyamalan is a one-hit wonder with The Sixth Sense.

Oh, and the last movie I saw was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was a worthy addition to the series, but had very little that we haven't seen in the other three of the series.

Sorry, MadTom. I didn't mean to compare To Hell and Back to the 85' version of BtT. I was just trying to describe how some of the actor's voices sounded off. That was the most obvious example that came to mind.

It's sad to hear that they forced him to make that movie. I kinda figured he'd be uncomfortable doing it since it would just bring more attention to everything he did, and war vets seem too humble to really enjoy that kind of attention. I wonder if he had flashbacks to the war during filming. =/

Was The Red Badge of Courage any good? I'd like to see that someday.

No, the ending wasn't suprising at all in my opinion. I was actually a bit disappointed of the way the movie ended, it could have been done better.
